Make sure your Alabama home insurance covers dog bites!
Dogs are among the most loyal, friendly companions a person could have, but sometimes they misbehave. It can be extremely distressing and costly if your dog bites someone and hurts them. That’s why it is so important that your Alabama home insurance covers dog bites.
One of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of your dog biting someone is to make sure it is well-trained. This could mean taking it to obedience school, or at least socializing it so it is comfortable around other people. You should always keep your dog under strict supervision, especially near children, who are at greater risk of being bitten in the face because their head is lower to the ground. Small children may also unwittingly provoke a dog.
Make sure your dog is secure at home and can’t escape when on a leash. There may be a risk of a dog breaking a rope or chain or breaking free of the backyard and running after passers-by. Make sure your fence is secure enough to keep your dog from escaping – some dogs are known to be ‘climbers’ and able to scale fences that seem more than adequate in terms of height!
Don’t think your dog is not capable of biting. The Insurance Information Institute reports that more than a third of home insurance liability claims are due to dog bites, so it’s wise to ensure you’re covered by your Alabama home insurance policy in the event that your dog does bite someone.
